Unfinished Tolkien tale completed by his son

An unfinished tale abandoned by JRR Tolkien in 1918 has been completed by his son and will be published next spring, it was announced yesterday.

Christopher Tolkien has worked for 30 years on an edited version of The Children of Hurin, a story set in the legendary land of elves, hobbits and dwarves depicted by his father in the epic trilogy The Lord Of The Rings.

Ladies of Grace Adieu preview

Ladies of Grace AdieuThe Friends of English Magic, a website dedicated to news and discussion of Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, posted a preview of The Ladies of Grace Adieu today.

The Ladies of Grace Adieu is a collection of short stories by Susanna Clarke, mostly set in the same slightly magical version of Regency England that we became acquainted with in her novel.

The book is due to hit shelves on October 16th. You can check this page if you’re interested in the signed limited edition – I’m definitely looking forward to recieving my copy.

First official Peter Pan sequel slated for Oct. release

On Oct. 5 Simon & Schuster, with great fanfare and much promotion, is planning to publish “Peter Pan in Scarlet,” the first “officially sanctioned” sequel to J. M. Barrie’s childhood classic.

“Peter Pan in Scarlet” takes place in 1926. The Lost Boys are the Old Boys, and they and Wendy Darling have grown up. Of course to return to Neverland they must become children again, and they do, with the aid of a new fairy, Fireflyer. But when the voyagers arrive in Neverland, they discover that it has been transformed, the land polluted, the trees autumnal.

More on Starbucks bookselling

We reported on it yesterday, but today’s PW Daily has further details not included in the previous article. For One More Day will have a first printing of 2.2 million copies, and Albom will be making eight appearances at Starbucks locations: New York City, Detroit, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Dallas, Los Angeles and Chicago.

Starbucks will launch a new website, StarbucksBookBreak.com, tomorrow.

Starbucks selling books

Though I’m in the vast minority among writers, I’ve never been very fond of Starbucks (probably due to past criticism and controversy). However, the coffee company will be selling Mitch Albom’s newest novel, For One More Day, in its stores this autumn – and it looks like that’s going to be giving some major publicity to the book.

Mitch is already well-known among many readers for his first novel, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, which sold over eight million copies.

Greenpeace plugs Firestorm novel

Firestorm David Klass cover artSince when does Greenpeace do blurbs for book jackets? Since now, according to a story in today’s PW Daily.

David Klass is writing a trilogy of young adult novels on three topics – the ocean, rainforests, and global warming. The first one, entitled Firestorm, will be released on September 5th of this year, and Gerd Leipold of Greenpiece called it “a gripping tale of the relentless and unnecessary harm we humans have done to our earth.”
