Expanding chick-flick audiences

A new study finds that chick flicks can be man magnets if they follow a few simple storytelling rules.

Jennifer Argo, an associate professor at the School of Business at the University of Alberta and one of the authors of the study, said she found that men are much more likely to enjoy ‘chick flicks,’ if they know they’re watching a fictional story.

In theory, the same principles could be applied to chick lit - though I’m not wholly convinced of the study’s merit.

DC Imprint Brewing up ‘Minx’ Line for Teen Girls

After decades of virtually ignoring the female audience, it was announced today that DC comics, Vertigo division will break-ground in May with a new line of graphic novels completely packaged and aimed at teen girls. With distribution through Alloy Entertainment and a start-up advertising budget of $250,000 they are set to give Manga and traditional girlie fare a solid run for their money.

“Notebook Girls” nabs book deal.

Ah highschool, the boys, the drunken cat-fights, the sexual exploration the notes passed furtively between classes.  For four former Stuyvesant High School students, all that ninth and tenth grade drama is really paying off.  The girls, who are now college freshman, decided to write and pass their notes in a a shared journal, instead of duplicating the same stories for each girl, and after passing along some Xeroxes of the notebooks to a literary agent in 2004 nabbed a book deal with Warner Books, who published “The Notebook Girls” in April.
