Author Miriam Engelberg Dies at 48

Engleberg, whose “Cancer Made Me a Shallower Person: A Memoir in Comics” was published by Harper Collins last spring passed away in her home in San Francisco, according to The Associated Press.

Her book grew out of a need to releive stress and deal with the unknowns of her illness.  Throughout it all her humor remained intact, even upon finding out the cancer had returned and was spreading.

“You know, my first thought when I heard was, ‘I hope it doesn’t hurt my book sales,’” she quipped. Of her illness, Engelberg once wrote, “Have I really become a shallower person since cancer? Some of my friends beg to differ and state unequivocally that I was already shallow before cancer.”
